Our kittens are used to using Ever Clean litter (Multiple Cat
variety). If you can't find Ever Clean (we purchase ours from
Petsmart) then another brand we recommend is Dr. Elsey's
litter also found at Petsmart. But it is important when the
kittens first come to your home to use the same type of litter
they are used to so they are not confused to where to go.
If you would like to change the litter type shortly after or any
other time, add the new litter type to the existing litter very
gradually.
When the kittens are very young, we use Yesterday's News
(paper pellet type) since we don't want them swallowing any
litter accidentally. Yesterday's News is great for not tracking but
you have to empty all the litter every 3 days approximately,
since urine is not discarded but absorbed in the paper pellets.
We used this type of litter for years and loved the very low
tracking but our cats seem to prefer clay litter. If tracking is a
problem then Yesterday's News may work for your household
best.
For litter boxes, we use the largest size open top litterboxes
that we can find but ones that can also fit into our utility laundry
sink to clean (photo above right). We use open top since some
Devon Rexes will not go into closed top style.
We also recommend getting Smart Scoop No-Stick Litter box
Spray to keep litter from sticking to the bottom and sides of the
box and the scooper, keeping boxes cleaner longer.
Once the litter starts to stick to the boxes, we
recommend using bleach and household
cleaner to scrub the litterboxes clean and
re-spraying with the Smart Scoop No-Stick
Litter box Spray.
Place several litter boxes strategically around
your home, to minimize the possibility of
accidents, in time you will know which ones
work well in what area and which ones to
remove. Last, please be sure you keep the
litter boxes clean at all times otherwise your
kitty/cat will not use them. Cats bury their
waste so that predators can't find them. A cat
will not walk into a box that is grossly smelly.
